The former host of "Top Gear" Richard Hammond was in good spirits Sunday, jesting: "I'm not dead," the day after he was hospitalized because of a dramatic car crash.

Hammond, 47, who was in Switzerland shooting Amazon's "The Grand Tour" on Saturday was transported to a hospital in St. Gallen after the electric-powered sports car he was driving crashed and caught on fire. His injuries were not life-threating, a spokesman said.

"Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames," a spokesman for "The Grand Tour," said in a statement.

"He was flown by air ambulance to hospital in St Gallen to be checked over, revealing a fracture to his knee," the statement said. "The cause of the crash is unknown and is being investigated."

Jeremy Clarkson, Hammond's co-host, said that it was the "biggest crash I've ever seen and the most frightening."

According to a correspondent at Sunday Mirror, due to the time constraints, Hammond wouldn’t have a chance to figure out the power of the Rimac car before driving it, which possibly led to Saturday’s accident.

In a video broadcast by Drive Tribe from his hospital bed Sunday, Hammond said that he would need knee surgery.

"I would like to thank all of the medical professionals who got me by air ambulance from the crash to the hospital and who have dealt with me ever since," he said.

With his leg hoisted up in a brace, Hammond took the time to apologize to his two daughters, Issy and Willow, and wife, Mindy.

Hammond was driving a Rimac Concept One, an electric sports car manufactured in Croatia, producers of "The Grand Tour" said in a statement Saturday.

They said Hammond was in a "serious crash" after the Hemburg Hill Climb.

"The Grand Tour" uploaded photos on Twitter of the car. The pictures were of a fire-damaged vehicle that was upside down.

This isn’t Hammond's first accident while taping a show. He got into a much more severe car accident years ago, during a taping of his old show "Top Gear."

He was in a coma and hospitalized for five weeks after sustaining severe brain injuries when the car he was drag racing popped a tire and sped off course at 288 miles per hour at Elvington Airfield, in the city of York in September 2006. He made a full recovery.

At the beginning of the year, Hammond said he had also hurt himself when he fell off his motorcycle while he was a taping a show in Mozambique.
