Farmers will get a chance to dispose of their “mountain” of unwanted tyres before recycling charges enter into force, Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment Denis Naughten has told the Irish Farmers Journal.

While initial efforts focused on tyre businesses, “it was always envisaged that we would deal with the farm-level problem as well. What we don’t want to see is farmers burying them or burning them,” he said.

Minister Naughten said he was in talks with farming organisations to organise a once-off campaign and collect the largest possible number of old tyres.

“What we are debating at the moment is whether it will be collection points or from farm to farm,” the minister added.
