Two spectators are rushed to hospital after being hit by flying TYRE debris - when two V8 utes crashed during a Supercars race

  • A tyre which flew over safety fence at the Newcastle 500 Supercars injured two
  • Paramedics treated the spectators at the scene before taking them to hospital
  • The incident occured on Saturday morning near Nobbys surf club in Newcastle 

Two spectators have been rushed to hospital after being hit by debris from a V8 ute crash.

A tyre or pieces of a tyre jumped a safety barrier near Nobbys surf club during the Newcastle 500 Supercars event.

Two utes in the Supercars support category collided during qualifying on Saturday morning, causing tyre debris to fly over the fence, injuring a man and a woman.

The pair were taken to the trackside medical centre where they were treated for minor ankle and knee injuries (pictured are crowds at the event)

Supercars confirmed the incident in a statement, saying emergency response teams were on the scene within minutes.

'Incidents of this nature are extremely rare,' the statement said.
