SISSETON, S.D. — A 78-year-old man kneeling by his pickup that had a flat tire was struck by a semi-truck and died Tuesday afternoon, March 2, on Interstate 29 near the North Dakota-South Dakota state border.
The name of the victim and the semi driver, who is facing possible charges, have not been released, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
The victim was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado pickup north on I-29 when he had a flat tire and parked on the shoulder and kneeled near the pickup on the driver's side, the patrol said.
A northbound 2013 Freightliner semi-truck and trailer also headed north on the interstate was unable to move over to the passing lane because another vehicle was in the way and struck the pickup and its driver, according to the patrol.
The 78-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, about 16 miles north of Sisseton. The 55-year-old truck driver was not injured.
