DICKINSON, N.Y. (WBNG) -- A Windsor man is facing multiple charges and over 20 traffic violations after fleeing police in a stolen vehicle through Binghamton, Johnson City, Windsor and Pennsylvania before being successfully taken into custody.

On March 30, at about 10:30 p.m., a Broome County Sheriff’s Road Patrol member observed a grey 2021 Mazda CX5 on Harry L Drive in Johnson City that had been reported stolen from Binghamton.

The sheriff’s deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the driver fled east through Binghamton.

The fleeing vehicle evaded deputies by driving through fences in Binghamton until it was located a short time later near the Red Roof Inn on Old Front Street.

After being located, the suspect fled south on Route I-81, traveling at a high speed and driving recklessly until patrols lost sight of the stolen vehicle near Dunbar Road in Windsor.

Patrols continued to search for the stolen vehicle in Windsor until it was discovered in a parking lot off Old Route 17 with its headlights off but the interior dome lights on.

Patrols attempted a traffic stop before the stolen vehicle backed up and collided with a patrol car. The stolen car sped away eastbound on Old Route 17 toward the Village of Windsor.

Officials said the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed through the Village of Windsor before turning south onto State Line Road and continuing to drive recklessly over state lines into Pennsylvania.

At this point, Pennsylvania State Police out of Gibson, coordinating with Broome deputies, deployed tire deflation devices, which damaged the suspect vehicle’s tires and caused the car to slow. Despite the damaged and disintegrating tires, the suspected vehicle fled south on Turnpike Street near Susquehanna, P.A., emitting sparks from the damaged wheels.

As the vehicle slowed, Joseph T. Martino, 33, of Windsor, jumped from the driver’s seat and attempted to run away.

A Broome County Sheriff’s deputy followed and tased Martino, who was then taken into custody.

Pennsylvania State Police took Martino into custody for possession of stolen property. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office will be charging Joseph T. Martino with the following:

  • Criminal mischief, third degree, felony
  • Reckless endangerment, second degree, misdemeanor
  • Unlawful fleeing a police officer, third degree, misdemeanor
  • Over 20 vehicle and traffic violations

“My thanks to the combined efforts of our Broome County Sheriff’s deputies and the Pennsylvania State Police,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar. “Because of his actions, this individual will now have to answer for crimes in both Pennsylvania and New York.”
