      NOW. AND THAT IS WHERE WE BEGIN TONIGHT. THAT POLICE OFFICER IS NOW RECOVERING FROM SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES. I AM BRYA BERRY IN FOR JACKSON KURTZ. ALL OF THIS HAPPENING IN DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY ON TRUMAN AND MAIN YESTERDAY. KMBC NINE S ALAN SHOPE IS GETTING ANSWERS ON WHAT HAPPENED. IT’S A THING THAT HAPPENS EVERY WEEKEND. DESMOND LOGAN HAS SPENT THE BETTER PART OF TWO MONTHS TRYING TO CLEAN UP THIS EMPTY PARKING LOT AND MAKE IT INTO A FUN, SAFE ZONE FOR SIDESHOWS AND ATV RIDING GROUPS. THEY RIDE IN PACKS AND THEN THEY ALL KIDS. THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND. THESE ARE KIDS. THESE ARE NOT GROWN MEN THAT YOU WOULD THINK WOULD HAVE THE SENSE NOT TO DO THIS. THIS IS KIDS AND THEY JUST OUT HAVING FUN. LOGAN IS TALKING ABOUT LOCAL GROUPS THAT RIDE AROUND THE CITY ON ATVS AND DO SIDESHOW TYPE EVENTS. ON SATURDAY NIGHT, POLICE SAY ONE ATV RIDER WENT TOO FAR. THEY SAY WHILE ATTEMPTING TO AVOID STOP STICKS, HE POPPED A WHEELIE AND STRUCK AN OFFICER, CAUSING HIM TO FALL AND SUFFER HEAD INJURIES. THEN HE LEFT THE SCENE. THE MAYOR, POSTING ABOUT THE INCIDENT ON FACEBOOK ON SUNDAY, SAYING QUOTE, LAST NIGHT, A RECKLESS ATV DRIVER CAUSED INJURIES TO A KANSAS CITY POLICE OFFICER. MAYHEM ON OUR STREETS AND CONTINUED TO DISPLAY THE LAWLESSNESS THAT TOO MANY DIRT BIKES, STUNT DRIVERS, ATV USERS, RACERS AND OTHERS DISPLAY ON THE STREETS AND DENSE AREAS OF OUR CITY. LOGAN SAYS IT WAS A TERRIBLE THING THAT HAPPENED. BUT HE SAYS AS THE SUMMER MONTHS GET CLOSER, THE PROBLEMS COULD ESCALATE. THERE’S REALLY NOWHERE IN THE CITY LIMITS FOR YOU TO RIDE. THAT’S WHY HE’S HOPING MORE VOLUNTEERS WILL STEP UP, INCLUDING THE CITY, AND HELP HIM FINISH THE PARKING LOT. POLICE SAID THE OFFICER WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES ON SATURDAY NIGHT, BUT WAS RELEASED AND IS EXPECTED TO MAKE A FULL RECOVERY IN KANSAS CITY. ALAN SHOPE KMBC NINE NEWS. NOW, POLICE ARE CALLING THIS AN AGGRAVATED ASSAULT INVESTIGATION. THEY ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE ATV DRIVER RIGHT NOW.

      A Kansas City man working to create a safe space for ATV riding is speaking out after a police officer was injured in a weekend collision involving one of the vehicles.Desmond Logan, the founder of "Smoke Your Tires, Not Your Homies," has spent the past two months trying to transform an empty parking lot into a controlled environment for ATV and stunt riders.He says the goal is to keep youth out of dangerous street riding situations.“They ride in packs, and what you have to understand is these are all kids,” Logan said. “These are not grown men that you think would have the sense not to do this. These are just kids, and they're not having fun.”Kansas City police say an ATV rider attempted to avoid a stop stick, popped a wheelie, and struck an officer. The rider then left the scene.The officer was taken to the hospital with serious head injuries but has since been released and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.Logan called the incident tragic but warned the issue may worsen as summer approaches.“In order for you to have fun with your ATV, there’s really nowhere in the city limits for you to ride,” he said.He’s now calling on more volunteers and city officials to help finish developing the parking lot as a designated riding area.
