Kansas City man continues push for safe ATV space after officer injured
A Kansas City man working to create a safe space for ATV riding is speaking out after a police officer was injured in a weekend collision involving one of the vehicles.
Desmond Logan, the founder of "Smoke Your Tires, Not Your Homies," has spent the past two months trying to transform an empty parking lot into a controlled environment for ATV and stunt riders.
He says the goal is to keep youth out of dangerous street riding situations.
“They ride in packs, and what you have to understand is these are all kids,” Logan said. “These are not grown men that you think would have the sense not to do this. These are just kids, and they're not having fun.”
Kansas City police say an ATV rider attempted to avoid a stop stick, popped a wheelie, and struck an officer.
The rider then left the scene.
The officer was taken to the hospital with serious head injuries but has since been released and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.
Logan called the incident tragic but warned the issue may worsen as summer approaches.
“In order for you to have fun with your ATV, there’s really nowhere in the city limits for you to ride,” he said.
He’s now calling on more volunteers and city officials to help finish developing the parking lot as a designated riding area.
