On Monday, Hilary Smith was named co-Female Athlete of the Year with the Harte twins – Ally and Taylor. Tuesday she hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to spark the Warrior softball team to an 8-1 win over Sartell. It’s believed to be the first ball hit over that fence by a Warrior, and only the second overall.
30 years ago (1995)
The tumultuous relationship between the county board and Social Services director Dennis Johnson is over. Johnson sent a memo to commissioner Mary Koep announcing his resignation effective May 31. Johnson, who has held the position since 1988 said he’s weary from battling the commissioners for five years.
40 years ago (1985)
(Photo) About 40 people stood in line this morning outside Brainerd’s First American Bank to apply for low-interest home loans. Most had slept there overnight to be first to get a 30-year loan at a fixed rate of 9.95%. A Deerwood woman was first in line at 3:30 p.m. yesterday.
60 years ago (1965)
Clarence Lepinske, Brainerd’s newest alderman, said more police protection is needed in Brainerd, especially during the summer. He cited the fact that a car with a loud muffler roared back and forth past city hall squealing its tires during the council meeting and nothing was done.
80 years ago (1945)
Official word was received of the confirmed death of S/Sgt. Byron Veillette of the famed 194th Tank Battalion. He died of cerebral malaria on July 11, 1942 in the Japanese prison Camp Cabanatuan in the Philippines. He was born in Brainerd and graduated from Washington High School where he captained the football team.
100 years ago (1925)
Brainerd high school won a loosely played baseball game at the Koering Filed on Saturday, defeating C-I by a score of 20 to 12. The local boys went wild in the third inning, with 13 runs dribbling across the plate before the range boys could stop the stampede. Errors on both sides were frequent.

37/46: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street).
