Firefighters and police race to Bilston tyre blaze

Emergency services raced to a fire outside an industrial unit in Bilston as tyres went up in flames.

A huge plume of black smoke could be seen billowing from the scene in Hatton Street just before noon on Friday, May 9.


Sirens could be heard as fire crews and police responded to the 999 call.

A small crowd of people from nearby homes lined the street, seemingly see what the commotion was about.

Two police cars also blocked off a stretch of the road, at the junction with Greenway Road, as firefighters tackled the blaze.

West Midlands Fire Service said crews from Wednesbury, Tipton and Walsall attended.

The fire, which started shortly before 11.50am, involved tyres outside an industrial unit.

Fire crews remained at the scene for just over an hour, leaving once no hotspots remained.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson said: "Shortly before 11.50am on Friday, we responded to Hatton Street, Bilston.

"Three fire engines from Wednesbury, Tipton and Walsall responded, arriving to find a fire affecting tyres outside an industrial unit.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three jets to extinguish the fire.

"A thorough check for hotspots was carried out, confirming no hotspots remained. We left the scene at 1.02pm."
