Better look up! Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has confirmed that three airships will converge over Akron in early June.

Wingfoot One, based at Wingfoot Lake in Suffield Township, will welcome Wingfoot Two from Pompano Beach, Florida, and Wingfoot Three from Carson, California, as the Akron company celebrates the 100th anniversary of its first blimp flight.

When the Pilgrim took a test flight June 3, 1925, Akron was preparing to celebrate its centennial. Now the city’s bicentennial festivities are in full swing. Wingfoot One will fly with a throwback color scheme to match the silver and black of the original blimp.

Goodyear's iconic Wingfoot One blimp is getting a makeover to mark the company's 100th anniversary of blimps.

When and where can I see the 3 blimps in Akron?

Flights are dependent on weather, but all three airships are scheduled to fly over downtown Akron for two big events:

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik will deliver his second State of the City address on June 3. Hosted by the Akron Roundtable, this year’s address will take place outdoors at Lock 3 at 200 S. Main St. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with the free event scheduled from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Akron residents can register at akronroundtable.org/. For more information, visit https://www.akronroundtable.org/  or call 330-247-8682.

The Akron RubberDucks will play host to the Chesapeake Baysox at 6:35 p.m. June 3 at Canal Park, 300 S. Main St. The first 1,000 fans will receive a T-shirt featuring the blimp. Tickets range from $7 to $39. For more information, go to https://www.milb.com/akron or call 330-253-5151. The Akron Press Club also is offering $55 tickets that include a behind-the-scenes stadium tour, a speech by RubberDucks President and General Manager Jim Pfander, an all-you-can-eat buffet, Duck Club seats for the game and a chance to throw out the first pitch.  Visit https://www.akronpressclub.org/events/press-club-takes-you-out-ball-game for more information and to buy tickets.

The three airships are expected to fly again June 4, so keep your eyes on the skies and have your camera ready.

Goodyear last had three airships in Northeast Ohio in 2018. In 2002, the company brought in three airships for the christening of a fourth. That marked the first time since the 1960s that four Goodyear blimps had flown together.
