Suspect flees after setting fire to Melbourne construction site, police say
The Melbourne Police Department responded to a 911 call on Sunday in relation to several fires started inside a construction area.
As units arrived, the suspect fled on foot and managed to escape, police said.
The Melbourne Fire Department responded and extinguished the fires. Damage is estimated at more than $100,000, officials said.
Police responded to the area of 961 E. Eau Gallie Blvd., a location currently under construction to convert an unoccupied business into an Aldi grocery store.
The call came in at approximately 10:30 a.m., when a construction worker observed a fire inside the area under development and called 911, police said.
This is an active arson investigation. MPD is working this as a joint investigation with the Department of Financial Services Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives on the case, officials said.
Once all units had already cleared the scene, MPD was contacted by the Texas Roadhouse located at 941 E. Eau Gallie Boulevard. An employee of the restaurant was attacked while performing maintenance on the establishment’s refrigerator unit on the roof, police said.
It is not yet known if the two incidents are related.
