Michigan EGLE grants to fund tire recycling events and cleanups

MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) – The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has awarded over $1.1 million in grants for community scrap tire drop-off events and tire cleanups.
Grants were awarded to counties all over the state, but those in the TV5 viewing area include the following:
- Arenac County: Arenac Conservation District ($21,000), and a 2025 private site ($15,000)
- Clare County: Hamilton Township ($6,000)
- Genesee County: Farm Bureau ($15,000), and Metropolitan Planning Commission ($9,500)
- Gratiot County: Gratiot Conservation District ($9,000)
- Huron County: Huron Conservation District ($12,000), Huron County Road Commission ($6,000), Village of Sebewaing ($6,000), and a 2025 private site ($3,000)
- Iosco County: Plainfield Township ($12,000)
- Midland County: Greendale Township ($6,000)
- Ogemaw County: Mills Township ($6,000)
- Roscommon County: Charlton Heston Academy ($12,000)
- Saginaw County: Saginaw Conservation District ($9,000)
- Tuscola County: Tuscola County Recycling ($30,000), Farm Bureau ($6,000), and a 2025 private site ($6,000).
EGLE said these drop-off events are an affordable and convenient way for residents to recycle tires. They can be reused in asphalt, mulch, and in manufacturing. Recycling tires also helps to keep the mosquito population low and removes a fire hazard risk.
