      CHANNEL. HAPPENING NOW. LINES ARE LONG AND APPOINTMENTS ARE BOOKED. MANY PEOPLE REACHING THEIR BREAKING POINT WITH THE DMV EVEN BEFORE THE DOORS OPENED THIS MORNING, DOZENS OF PEOPLE WERE LINED UP OUTSIDE THE KERNERSVILLE DRIVER’S LICENSE OFFICE. SOME EVEN BROUGHT LAWN CHAIRS TO SIT IN. DUE TO THOSE LONG WAIT TIMES. GOVERNOR JOSH STEIN AND OTHER STATE OFFICIALS ARE CALLING FOR INCREASED FUNDING TO HELP THE DMV FIX THOSE PROBLEMS. THE GOVERNOR STOPPED BY A DMV OFFICE THIS MORNING IN RALEIGH, AND HE SPOKE WITH DOZENS OF PEOPLE WAITING IN LINE ABOUT THEIR FRUSTRATIONS DEALING WITH THE AGENCY. ONE WOMAN SAYS SHE DROVE AN HOUR FROM RALEIGH TO HENDERSON JUST TO WAIT IN LINE IN ORDER FOR HER DAUGHTER TO GET HER DRIVER’S LICENSE. ONCE WE GOT THERE, WE KNEW THAT THE WALK INS WERE AVAILABLE TO COME IN AND BE SERVICED AT NOON UNTIL CLOSING. WHEN WE GOT THERE, THERE WAS A SIGN ON THE DOOR THAT THERE WAS A LUNCH BREAK FROM 11 TO 1, SO WE STOOD IN LINE. WE WAITED AND THEN IT STARTED TO RAIN. PEOPLE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO LINE UP FOR HOURS AT THE DMV OR TAKE DAYS OFF WORK, OR USE THEIR VACATION TIME IN ORDER TO GET THEIR DRIVER’S LICENSE OR WHATEVER OTHER BUSINESS THEY NEED. THE GOVERNOR SAYS HIS BUDGET PROPOSAL INCLUDES FUNDING FOR 61 NEW DRIVER’S LICENSE EXAMINERS AND 24 NEW POSITIONS TO STAFF NEW AND EXPANDED DRIVER’S LICENSE OFFICES. THE HOUSE BUDGET CALLS FOR THE SAME EXPANSION OF DMV STAFF SATURDAY. WALK IN HOURS AT THE DMV RETURNED TOMORROW. 20 DRIVER’S LICENSE OFFICES ACROSS NORTH CAROLINA WILL BE OPEN FROM 8 A.M. TO NOON.       North Carolina Governor Josh Stein and other state officials are calling for increased funding to help correct DMV problems.Stein visited a DMV office Friday morning in Raleigh, where he spoke with dozens of people waiting in line about their frustrations dealing with the agency. “Hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians each year visit the DMV, and they need to be able to take care of their business in a timely manner,” Stein said. One woman told Stein that she drove an hour from Raleigh to Henderson just to wait in line in order for her daughter to get her license. “Every North Carolinian on our roads will need to interact with the DMV at some point, so we have a responsibility to get it right,” Department of Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins said.Get the latest news stories of interest by clicking hereDMV Commissioner Paul Tine said he’s dedicated time to meet with DMV customers and staff to learn about the challenges they’re facing since he was appointed to the position a month ago. “While we have begun raising pay for examiners, simplifying the website, and finding opportunities to get more people through offices this summer, we know there is much more work to be done to ensure a positive experience for customers and team members alike,” Tine said. Stein’s state budget proposal includes funding for 61 new driver license examiners and 24 new positions, and staff for new and expanded driver license offices. Last summer, nearly 17,000 customers were served at 16 offices during the 12 Saturdays of the 2024 season, according to the DMV. Services that will be offered during the Saturday hours include driver's license or ID cards, renewals or duplicate orders, address changes, REAL ID issuances, and road tests for customers who have already completed the knowledge and written tests, according to the DMV.
