WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Kansas Highway Patrol is urging caution with used-vehicle purchases after an inspection revealed a sophisticated attempt to reveal that a truck was stolen.

This began last month with the KHP Troop V Auto Theft Unit recovering a stolen 2022 GMC Sierra in Lyon County.

“Troop V received information about an individual applying for a Kansas title on the GMC. There were issues in the application because the VIN on the title was currently in use in another state with a newer title,” the KHP said.

Troopers met with the person applying for the title and inspected the vehicle. During the inspection, the highway patrol said troopers found that the truck had been “cloned” with a fraudulent, VIN, tire label and load label.

“The real VIN was located and verified the truck had been stolen in Dallas, Texas, last year,” the KHP said. “The applicant had bought the truck in good faith and unfortunately, was also victimized.”

The KHP said it’s important to be vigilant when purchasing vehicles, making sure key fobs work and that the valet keys open the doors.

“Inspect the VIN and other identifying labels to see if they are authentic,” the KHP said.
