Ex-F1 Driver Advises Max Verstappen to Push Limits at Canadian GP Despite Race Ban Risk
PA Images/Alamy Images

Max Verstappen is a hard racer. The Dutch driver leaves no stone unturned when he is up against the competition. More often than not, this allows the Red Bull star to annihilate the competition. However, on some occasions, like this year’s Spanish GP, things turn into a nightmare. Now former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer has asserted that Verstappen will not change his style despite the latest fiasco.

During the Spanish GP, Max Verstappen found himself in a bad position following a late Safety Car. The reigning world champion was on a set of hard tires, giving him virtually no grip compared to his rivals. Verstappen ran wide while battling against George Russell. When Red Bull instructed him to give the position back, the Dutchman ended up colliding with the Mercedes.

The four-time world champion was handed a ten-second time penalty which dropped him down to tenth place. Moreover, three penalty points were added to his super license, bringing him one point away from a race ban. While Red Bull has warned Verstappen to not make any rash decisions that could lead to a race ban, Palmer remains adamant that the 27-year-old will not change how he races.

Jolyon Palmer made it clear that Max Verstappen only knows one way race. The reigning world champion pushes himself to the limit and is ready to risk everything on the race track. This gives him the edge over his rivals on certain occasions and Palmer insisted that this is unlikely to change. Though, the ex-Renault driver made it clear that the incident in Barcelona was not the same. He blamed Verstappen’s anger for misjudging the move.

I still don’t think he’s going to change his approach. I still think he has one way of racing, and it is to throw everything at it and see what sticks. [He] risks more than the others, probably, and I don’t see it changing. The Barcelona one is obviously, it’s a different scenario, that’s not racing. He’s had red mist, hasn’t he? He’s lost his cool rather than misjudged a racing move.

Jolyon Palmer said on F1 Nation podcast

Max Verstappen to still ‘push to the limit’

The Spanish GP was one of the most controversial races in Max Verstappen’s career. The four-time world champion faced immense backlash from the entire paddock, with many demanding him to be disqualified. However, Verstappen has so far denied all claims of having intentionally crashed into George Russell.

Jolyon Palmer reckoned that the Red Bull star will at least not do something similar to his clash with Russell anytime soon. Yet, the Briton was convinced that Verstappen will still race the same way, when it comes to going round the outside or making late lunges. Palmer was adamant that the four-time world champion will continue to push to the limit at every race.

But in terms of actually what he’s going to do on the track, I don’t think he’ll do that again. But I think I see him racing the same way, still firing in lunges, still trying to hang on around the outside if he possibly can. And will claim foul, will push, he’ll push the limits in every way.

Jolyon Palmer added

Certainly, Max Verstappen needs to introspect himself after his incident in Spain. The four-time world champion cannot afford any such incident again, which could put him at risk of a race ban. The 27-year-old’s title hopes will go down the drain if he faces another controversy like this in the coming races. Now, it’s time for Verstappen to avoid such mistakes and push himself to the fullest.

Sophie Cunningham gets shoutout from NFL star after sticking up for Caitlin Clark

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham made it clear on Tuesday night that she has Caitlin Clark's back, and at least one NFL player was impressed with the show of loyalty. Several players got into heated altercations during the Fever's 88-71 win over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday. Clark got into it with Sun guard Jacy Sheldon multiple times, the second of which involved the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year being hit in the face and shoved to the ground. Then with less than a minute remaining in the game, Sheldon had a meaningless fast-break opportunity and was dragged to the ground by Cunningham. Sheldon, Cunningham and Sun forward Lindsay Allen were ejected following the foul and ensuing scrum. Los Angeles Rams linebacker Jared Verse appreciated that Cunningham sent a message on behalf of Clark. Verse shared the clip on social media and wrote, "THIS STANDING ON BUSINESS!!!!" Cunningham was assessed a flagrant 2 foul. She was fined under standard WNBA rules but not suspended. Clark is the most popular player in the WNBA, so it is no surprise that fans — including Verse — appreciated the way Cunningham took up for her teammate. Cunningham has even seen a massive spike in jersey sales since the game.

Potential Kevin Durant to Celtics Trade Receives Update on Friday

The Kevin Durant trade saga has been ongoing for weeks. It's still unclear who his next team will be when the 2025-26 season starts. While they would jump through a few hoops to make it happen, the Boston Celtics could get involved. Zach Lowe revealed on "The Zach Lowe Show" that he's heard rumors about the Celtics being involved in a Durant deal. He said, "I've heard that there have been discussions of three-team Durant-related trades where Jrue Holiday moves somewhere." This led to speculation that perhaps the Celtics themselves are trying to trade for Durant. They could do it without trading Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown, but they would have to gut most of their rotation and have to simultaneously acquire Durant while getting under the NBA's second tax apron. Lowe later clarified his meaning when he mentioned the Celtics' involvement; he didn't mean that the Celtics were interested in Durant specifically but rather that they could get involved in a Durant trade. "One clarification here (because) we rushed at (the) end -- when I mentioned the very broad idea of 3-team trades involving Jrue Holiday (and Durant), I meant to indicate Durant would go to the third team in those deals (i.e. maybe a team on his list) -- and NOT to Boston," Lowe wrote. "The Celtics are NOT looking to trade for KD. I don't think such a 3-team trade is really in the ether anyway. Thought this would be obvious but should have stated more clearly." Holiday is on an expensive contract, though not as expensive as Durant's. Boston may be happy to get involved if it helps them save considerable money, however the 2023 NBA champions are not expected to be Durant's next team.

Patrick Mouratoglou Rejects John McEnroe’s Claim that Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner Would’ve Defeated Prime Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros

John McEnroe, just before the French Open final, claimed that the two talented youngsters, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz would have defeated Rafael Nadal at his best at the Roland Garros. Many players consider the toughest task in tennis is to beat Nadal at Roland Garros. Nadal, the King of Clay, is the winner of 92 singles titles, 63 of them he lifted on clay, which also includes his 14 French Open trophies. So when McEnroe made that remark about Alcaraz and Sinner, it became a talking point of the town. Sam Querrey, on the Nothing Major podcast, said that if Alcaraz met Nadal 10 times at the French Open, he would have emerged victorious four times. Nadal’s longtime rival, Andy Murray, said it takes time to achieve what Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic have done on the tour. Now Serena Williams‘ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou has given his take on the topic. He took to Instagram only to bluntly reject McEnroe’s claims. I don’t think Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner would be favorites against Rafael Nadal in the Roland Garros final because Nadal has a different game than other players, so compatible with clay. I don’t know how they would adapt. That’s why I think you can’t say that. Nobody can know. And when you think that this guy has won Roland Garros 14 times, it’s hard to say that these guys would beat him. Check out his post here: Nadal called time on his illustrious career at the 2024 Davis Cup after Spain’s defeat to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. He had met Sinner thrice on tour, including two times at Roland Garros. The Italian was never successful in beating the 39-year-old. Alcaraz too met his idol three times and could clinch a win just once. The 22-year-old recently defended his French Open title by overcoming his arch-rival in five hours and 29 minutes, which has now become the longest French Open final in the history of tennis. After Alcaraz’s win, McEnroe claimed he had never watched a better French Open final than this. It was Alcaraz’s fifth consecutive victory over the Italian and now he leads 8-4 in the head-to-head matchups. Alexander Bublik gives his verdict on Carlos Alcaraz’s French Open win against Jannik Sinner The tennis world will not easily forget about the epic French Open final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The match, as expected was a tight affair from the very first game. Sinner somehow took a 2-0 lead and when the watchers of the game thought that match would end quickly, Alcaraz increased his intensity to take the next set before saving three championship points in the following set, winning it to force the decider, which he claimed through the tie-breaker. While Sinner suffered from a few sleepless nights because of the fourth set, Alcaraz has trouble accepting that he made that incredible turnaround to defend his title. Alexander Bublik has become a fan of these two young rivals and wants them to meet in many Grand Slam finals. I wish them a lot of success, and every Slam I watch, I hope for them to win, and I hope to see them in the final. I hope this Grand Slam race increases and shortens between them and the greats that we have now. To be present in that era, I think, is really exciting. Alexander Bublik told Tennis TV Alcaraz is in London participating at the Queen’s Club Championships to chase his fourth grass-court title. He has gone past Adam Walton and will next meet his compatriot Jaume Munar. Sinner is in Halle, bidding to defend his title, and has knocked out Yannick Hanfmann to schedule a clash with Bublik.

How Tom Brady reportedly impacted major Raiders decision

Whispers emerged in early March suggesting that the Las Vegas Raiders, in need of an upgrade at quarterback, were not all that interested in signing Sam Darnold, the top signal-caller of this year's free-agency class. For a piece published Thursday, The Athletic's Michael Silver offered more information about why the Raiders ultimately chose to acquire Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks earlier this offseason. "The Seahawks’ pursuit of Darnold snuck up on many NFL observers and proceeded in rapid-fire fashion," Silver wrote. "While some believed the Las Vegas Raiders would try to sign Darnold, minority owner Tom Brady — a seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback whose opinion held great sway — was not in favor of that approach, according to a source familiar with the franchise’s internal discussions. Meanwhile, Smith, seeking a lucrative extension from the Seahawks, reacted coldly to the team’s initial offer. The Raiders, having recently hired former Seattle coach Pete Carroll, emerged as a potential trade partner." Stories from the spring detailed how Brady was heavily involved in the Raiders' offseason decisions regarding their quarterback situation. According to Dan Pompei of The Athletic, TB12 liked how Smith "can process and throw the football." After the Raiders signed Smith to a two-year, $85.5M extension that included $66.5M guaranteed, Brady reportedly told the 34-year-old that his "decision making" and "leadership" were among the reasons Las Vegas went in that direction. According to Pro Football Reference, Darnold finished the 2024 regular season ranked fifth in the league with 4,319 passing yards, fifth with 35 touchdown passes and sixth among qualified players with a 102.5 passer rating. To compare, Smith was fourth with 4,320 yards through the air, tied for 13th with 21 passing touchdowns and 19th with a 93.2 passer rating. That said, Darnold played poorly as the Minnesota Vikings' QB1 in the club's biggest games of the season — a Week 18 loss at the Detroit Lions that determined the No. 1 seed for the playoffs and a wild-card playoff defeat against the Los Angeles Rams. One can't help but wonder if those outings convinced Brady that Darnold hasn't completely kicked his habit of seeing "ghosts" during games. Despite how he ended his tenure in Minnesota, Darnold received a three-year, $100.5M contract from the Seahawks back in March. Silver's update seems to indicate that previous reports about Brady "running" the Raiders while serving as Fox's lead in-game NFL analyst were at least somewhat accurate.
