SPOTSYLVANIA, VA - On Friday, June 20th, a Spotsylvania Circuit Court judge sentenced a woman to decades behind bars after she admitted to killing her three roommates in Virginia before fleeing the state and leading police in New York on a 100 mph chase before crashing her car.
Alyssa Venable, 24, pleaded guilty back in February to killing 60-year-old Gregory Scott Powell, 65-year-old Carole Anne Reese, and 77-year-old Robert John McGuire in 2024, according to Law & Crime.
On Friday, a judge sentenced Venable to 99 years in a state penitentiary. She also received an additional 14 years on a felony firearms charge.
Court records indicate that Venable has a long criminal history dating back to March 2019 that started with an alleged shoplifting incident.
Later that month, the original charge was amended to one count of entering property to cause damage.
In December 2021, she was charged with petit larceny. She had also previously been charged with reckless driving, assault and battery.
The triple murder happened on June 4, 2024, when a roommate returned to the home they shared at around 10:00 p.m. and called 911 after discovering a body. Upon arriving on the scene, deputies found the victims dead and Venable's car gone.
Authorities immediately notified the public that Venable was considered armed and dangerous.
She was caught a few days later in her 2009 Honda Civic on I-86 in Steuben County, New York.
Police said she ignored an attempted traffic stop, drove 100 mph, and ultimately crashed her car when state troopers successfully took out her tires using a tire-deflating device.
She was then taken into custody with the help of United States Marshals Service and the New York State Police, WUSA9 reported at the time.
Hours before her arrest, Venable's grandmother said her granddaughter was not violent, and she prayed that police would find her before she could hurt herself.
"I pray that the authorities are looking for her as a person who is in harm's way as well because we think she's in harm's way if not from someone else but from her own self," Jane Venable said.
"I'm pleading for the authorities to consider someone who is also in desperate need for help."
Venable reportedly told a friend that "she hurt people" and left instructions to care for her dog.
Citing search warrant documents, WJLA reported that deputies received a call from someone who knew Venable, saying she dropped her dog off with him and was "acting strange."
The friend also told deputies about a note Venable left saying she was going to take her own life in California, adding that Venable left cash, instructions on how to care for her dog, and account passwords.
