CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Heat like we’ve been enduring this week can do bad things to our cars.

Bob Archer who owns Bob’s Wheel Alignment sees it every day.

“Air conditioning and the cooling systems, all of that needs to be checked before you start out in this kind this weather,” Archer said.

Car repair shops, like Bob’s, are seeing car after car limp in because of the heat.

All of that costs money, so here’s how you can save yourself the time and expense.

Batteries are easily affected by extreme temperatures. If your car has already been showing signs of the battery not functioning properly like trouble starting, hurry up and get it checked.

Check your tire pressure too.

Virginia’s AAA says piping hot asphalt can turn a small problem, into a big one.

“And when a tire is underinflated, there’s actually more of it that’s hitting against the pavement, creating the risk of a blowout,” said Morgan Dean, the AAA Mid-Atlantic Spokesperson.

Even with preventative maintenance and regular checks, your car can break down during a heatwave so prepare for those untimely events by signing up for motor clubs and roadside assistance programs through your insurance company.

Also make sure you keep your car stocked with water and snacks in the case you do get stuck somewhere, waiting for help.
