The European Union is not currently considering the possibility of decoupling Ukraine and Moldova’s paths towards EU membership, despite a recent claim by Romanian President Nicușor Dan.

Details: Dan announced on 26 June that the first negotiating cluster for Moldova would be opened next week during a Moldova-EU summit on 4 July.

However, Dan had to retract his words later that day, saying he had made a "mistake".

His claim was questionable even from a procedural standpoint, as the decision to open a negotiating cluster would not be made at a summit, and the summit participants do not have the authority to make such an announcement without the agreement of all 27 EU member states.

"The issue of decoupling Moldova and Ukraine in the EU accession negotiations is currently not on the agenda," a European Council official confirmed to European Pravda on condition of anonymity.

Multiple sources in Brussels have told European Pravda that the EU is currently making every effort to demonstrate that the option of separating the accession processes of Ukraine and Moldova is not under consideration.

"This is also reflected in the documents: the conclusions on Moldova and Ukraine regarding EU enlargement are identical word for word," the article states.

However, the authors point out that although the EU summit failed to reach consensus on the paragraph concerning Ukraine due to Hungary’s opposition, the paragraph on Moldova’s accession was supported by all 27 EU member states.
