Wales began their U20s World Championship campaign with a disappointing defeat at the hands of Argentina in a thrilling opener in Verona.

An early penalty try, as well as touchdowns from Steffan Emanuel and Evan Minto appeared to put Wales in control during a superb opening half an hour that twice saw Argentina reduced to 14 men, although they did respond with an early converted score from Tadeo Ledesma Arocena.

However, a quickfire double from Los Pumitas shortened the deficit to just five points heading into half-time, with Tomas Rapetti and Timoteo Silva both going over, and that momentum continued after the break.

Rapetti crashed over for his second try of the game, before Harri Ford and Rafael Benedit exchanged penalties.

A draw began to look increasingly likely heading into the final ten minutes, although Welsh replacement Harri Wilde could have handed his side the lead again from the tee, but could only put his late penalty wide.

And it was Argentina, whose predicted front line power shone through for most of the evening, that would have the final say as Agustín Garcia campos Fiszman went over three minutes from time to hand his side the win, and a bonus point.

The result leaves Richard Whiffin's men with plenty of work to do in the Pool B, with France lying in wait this Friday.

Indeed, while there were some really pleasing passages from Wales, particularly in how they held off a ferocious Argentine pack for so much of the second half, their inability to capitalise on such a strong first-half position will surely be a disappointment.

An early penalty try appeared to set Wales on their way, with Pascal Senillosa sent to the bin for a deliberate knock on after just three minutes.

But despite that early setback Argentina made a point of continuing to try and play, with skipper Felipe Ledesma at the heart of their brightest moments with some eye-catching early plays.

He was also one of the architects for his side's opening try on 15 minutes, rising two tackles before laying off for Felix Corletto, and he fed Arocena, who then powered over

Argentina's indiscipline, however, seemed something of a problem. Matchwinner Fiszman penalised for entering a the wrong way, with Ford then slotting over the resulting penalty.

Wales took further control just a few minutes later, with Emanuel darting over in the corner following a superb flowing move, and looked to be nearly out of sight when Minto's superb finish added another converted score.

However, Fiszman's return from the bin would signal a rapid revival from Los Pumitas.

Rapetti crashed over following a typically powerful rolling maul just after half an hour, as Argentina's front line once again flexed its muscle.

But if their second was inspired by brute force, their third was delivered through a moment of real sloppiness from Wales, who were caught cold more or less straight from the restart.

Ford's undercooked kick sparked a quick line out, and Silva was on hand to gallop away down the right, clear of a stunned Welsh defence, and across the whitewash.

Even the half-time whistle seemingly did little to halt Argentina's newfound momentum, with Rapetti going over for his second try of the night three minutes into the second half.

Emanuel then had an effort ruled out just short of the line a few minutes later after being penalised for a knock-on, before Ford and Benedit exchanged penalties in a contest that continued to ebb and flow.

Argentina's pack continued to ask serious questions of the Welsh defence, whose resilience in the face of such an onslaught will likely be a key positive of a performance that will have left Whiffin with plenty to digest.

Wilde spurned an opportunity for Wales ten minutes from time by putting a penalty wide, before replacement Louie Trevett then had a try chalked off late on.

Argentina survived, and snatched victory at the death. Another relentless drive allowing Fiszman the opportunity to go over and touch down for a converted score.

Disappointment for Wales, who will have to pick themselves up quickly if they are to overtake last year's disappointing eighth-place finish in this competition. But Whiffin will certainly feel there are some positives to build on ahead of the contest with France in Rovigo.

Full-time

All over.

A brilliant game. But a disappointing start for Wales.

Wales penalised

And that is that.

Try! Argentina 34-27 Wales

The power of Los Pumitas finally shines through, and Fiszman goes over.

Conversion added, and Wales heading for defeat.

34-27

Try chalked off

And it's all down to a briliant run from Bowen.

He breaks the line briliantly and lays off for Boshoff whose carry brings Bowen back into the game.

Wales are halted just before the line, and but the pick and go from Trevett initially looks to have yielded a try.

However, Gwynne is penalised by the TMO for a neck roll.

27-27

Penalty missed!

Wilde puts his penalty wide!

How costly could that be?

27-27

Opportunity for Wales

Argentina penalised for not rolling away near their own 22 and Wales have a chance here from the tee....

27-27

Penalty goes against Argentina

Wild celebrations as the penalty goes against Argentina for not driving straight in the scrum.

The decision not to go for goal looking potentially foolish there.

Wales survive.

27-27

Argetina bashing on the door

Another really strong drive from Argentina, who are met by a firm Welsh defence.

Plenty of the big boys in this Pumitas side getting involved.

A few pick and go's held up as Argentina slowly but surely edge their way to the line....

Gael Galvan, who's only recently come on for Rapetti, heavily invovled here.

They eventually win a penalty, but opt to go for the scrum.

27-27

Another water break

Chance for both teams to regroup here.

27-27

Another Wales change

Minto making way for Caio James.

27-27

Change for Wales

Bowen is on for Boshoff.

Looks to get involved straight away following the scrum.

Skips past a couple of tackles before being halted. A promising flash from him there.

27-27

Osian Roberts with a big tackle

Clatters into Coll with a superb tackle to force the knock-on after another promising drive from Los Pumitas.

27-27

Penalty! Argentina 27-27 Wales

Argentina restore parity as Benedit kicks over from just inside the 22.

27-27

Penalty! Argentina 24-27 Wales

Wales win a penalty and choose to go for goal.

It's a long way out, but Ford nails it.

His side are back in front.

24-27

Wales think they're over

Fantastic build-up and I think it's Emanuel who goes over.

He doesn't look confident, and replays suggest this will be a knock on.

Yep. Ruled out.

Storey is on for Duclos for Argentina, by the way.

24-24.

Try! Argentina 24-24 Wales

Argentina win a penalty, which is taken quickly.

Another pick and go and Rapetti batters his way through two red shirts to go over.

Conversion comes back off the post.

24-24

Second half

Sion Davies penalised for a knock on from what's a high kick to restart this contest.

19-24

Players back out

Second half coming up.

Half-time

That's the end of a hugely entertaining first half in Verona.

Wales holding on

Argentina really pushing now.

Senillosa lays off brilliantly for Silva, who's halted just short.

Argentina recyle possession, but are guilty of a pick and go too many.

Penalty to Wales, who can now regroup.

19-24

Try! Argentina 19-24 Wales

Deary me.

Really sloppy from Wales.

Restart from Ford is undercooked, and Argentina catch them napping with a quick line out.

Silva races away, puts on the burners, and there's no stopping him as he gets away and touches down.

Conversion this time is good, and suddenly it's game on.

19-24.

Try! Argentina 12-24 Wales

The line out drive yields a potential route back into the game.

Rapetti powers over.

Conversion is wide.

12-24

Argentina trying to apply some pressure

They win another penalty from the maul and go for the corner.

They're back to 15 now, and looking to muster up a response before the interval.

7-24

Try! Argentina 7-24 Wales

Brilliant.

A try from more or less nothing.

Minto wrong foots his man and hits the gas, and darts his way over the line.

Ford adds the extras.

Wales firmly in control now.

7-24.

Try! Argentina 7-17 Wales

That's a briliant move from Wales, and Emanuel is on hand to finish in the corner.

Ford adds the extras and Wales are firmly in control of this contest now.

7-17

Penalty! Argentina 7-10 Wales

Ford makes no mistake with the kick.

Wales back in front.

7-10.

Another yellow card

Fiszman is in the bin now for entering the ruck from the wrong side.

Penalty to Wales, who will go for goal here.

7-7

Change for Wales

Ellis Lewis on for Sion Davies.

7-7

Water break

Still very, very warm here tonight.

Been a really intriguing opening to this game, mind.

Positive play from both sides at times.

7-7

TRY! Argentina 7-7 Wales

Given!

Benedit makes no mistake with the conversion, and it's all square in Verona.
