Polaris 32 Recap: Team North America Wins In Dramatic Squads Event

It was an intense, back-and-forth event in the United Kingdom as Team North America and Team Europe delivered a great show at Polaris 32, with North America narrowly emerging as the winners after 21 matches.

Polaris, the biggest grappling super fight show in Europe, has had a ton of success with these team-based events and the women's regional teams (captained by Helena Crevar and Nia Blackman) were packed with talent. Each team is made up of six grapplers and both teams keep sending out grapplers until 90 minutes of match time has elapsed. Each win during that time is worth one point, and a submission nets the team an additional point.

There were some incredible runs here, starting in the first half with Ane Svendsen who reeled off three wins. After Alanis Santiago's kimura finish put her team up by three in the second half, AOJ's Margot Ciccarelli showed up big with FIVE straight victories - including beating 2024 IBJJF World No-Gi Champ BSM. However, Helena then took the mats, submitted Margot and scored two more wins to put her team up by two.

Then came the craziest result of the day when ADCC Trials Champion Sula-Mae Loewenthal beat Helena Crevar - although the match was very unusual. Almost immediately, Sula jumped past the guard straight to mount and hunted a variety of submissions. Eventually Helena escaped and attacked the legs until the round ended and Sula won by decision. Here is the thing - the round only lasted about ninety seconds because of the time limits on the Squads event. Should the round have lasted longer, even the usual five minutes under Polaris, there's no way to know for sure what would have happened but things did end with Crevar back on the attack.

It wasn't enough for the team win, but it was an incredible upset to end the day regardless and both teams finished the day celebrating.

Also on the card were London-based stars Owen Jones and Eoghan O'Flanaghan who both won in impressive fashion. Eoghan locked on a nasty Z lock against Mohammed Avtarhanov to get the tap during the Squads halftime and Owen outworked Carson Coles on his way to a decision win.
