There is a growing concern in this crazy world we live in that someone will push the much-feared nuclear button. If that worst-case scenario ever plays out, there are a dozen locations in Missouri that should be very worried based on recent assessments by experts.

There have been many maps shared that reveal the places in America that FEMA believes would be most at-risk if a nuclear exchange between the United States and an enemy were to take place. The most recent that I've found on the Oddly Terrifying Reddit shows what the United States government believes would be prime targets for an enemy nation. Something important to note. The triangles on the map show targets that would be hit in a "limited" 500 missile scenario. The black dots are targets in a 2,000 missile all-out attack.

Map published by FEMA showing potential US nuclear targets in 2,000 and 500 warhead scenarios.

Let's zoom in on Missouri specifically. Notice that there are several targets in both categories.

Why would Missouri have so many prime targets in a nuclear exchange?

The United States B-2 stealth bomber fleet is located at Whiteman Air Force Base near Knob Noster, Missouri. Both Kansas City and St. Louis metro areas are viewed as key transportation and communication hubs, too. There is also a belief now that even the boot heel of Missouri might be targeted by an enemy in the belief that they could trigger a massive New Madrid quake to create more chaos. That's a questionable strategy, but could be attempted in the event that an enemy would try a devastating first-strike attack. All of these hypothetical Missouri nuclear targets are why the infamous 1983 apocalyptic flick "The Day After" was set in western Missouri.

Let's hope this dreaded day never becomes reality and that Missouri being the target of a nuclear attack remains in the realm of fictional movies and hypothetical government worst-case scenarios.
