Warning - this article contains major spoilers for Squid Game season 3

Squid Game season three has wrapped up the hit South Korean thriller with an earth-shattering conclusion for Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae).

After a failed uprising led to a final round of brutal games, Gi-hun decides to sacrifice himself to save the newborn baby of Jun-hee (Jo Yu-ri).

Six months later, the child was retrieved by the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and delivered to detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), along with the life-changing prize money of 45.6 billion won.

However, that wasn’t the end of the story as the games will presumably still continue and a wild cameo at the end of the episode seems to confirm they’re happening worldwide.

In a bombshell twist, the Front Man is being driven through Los Angeles when he spies a game of ddakji being played, the infamous game the salesman (Gong Yoo) used to recruit new players.

This salesman is portrayed by none other than two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, suggesting she’ll be making another special guest appearance in a US-set Squid Game spin-off.

Unfortunately, Netflix’s continuation of the franchise could still be some years away. Here’s everything we know so far.

What’s been confirmed about Squid Game’s American spin-off?

In October 2024, Deadline reported that an English-language version of Squid Game was in the works for Netflix.

This spin-off series is set to be helmed by David Fincher, director of The Social Network and Gone Girl, as well as the director and executive producer of Netflix’s hit dramas Mindhunter and House of Cards.

It’s expected to take place in the USA, though no title or plot details have been confirmed just yet.

The offshoot is also expected to be a continuation of the series set in the same universe and not an English-language remake of the original drama.

Dennis Kelly, creator of the UK's Channel 4 thriller Utopia, is reportedly penning the scripts and reports have also claimed the series is aiming to start filming this December.

There is no cast confirmed just yet, though Blanchett is speculated to make more appearances.

She has previously worked with Fincher on his 2008 historical epic The Curious Case of Benjamin Button opposite Brad Pitt, so it seems likely she could return.

Netflix has so far issued no official statement on the upcoming series. We have contacted the streamer for further comment.
