Liverpool release statement as forward Diogo Jota dies in tragic car crash
The 28-year-old has played in England since joining Wolves in 2017 and was a Premier League winner this season
Former Wolves forward Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car accident.
Sister title The Mirror cite Spanish outlet Marca saying that the Liverpool forward passed away following an accident in Zamora, Spain on Thursday morning.
The Portugal international joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, having been a part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s team which won promotion in 2018.
During his career at Anfield the 28-year-old won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and was a Champions League runner up in 2022. He also won the Nations League title with Portugal just last month.
The forward's brother Andre Silva also died in the accident. The 26-year-old was also a professional footballer, with Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel.
The Guardia Civil told BBC Sport that Jota and his brother died at about 00:30 local time.
They said that their car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blow-out while overtaking another vehicle and then caught fire.
Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he has three children, just last month.
Liverpool released a statement which read: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
"We will continue to provide them with our full support."
