The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to Riverside Episcopal Church when a car slammed through the front entrance on Wednesday morning. The Sheriff's Office said no one was injured, and the driver was not arrested. The building sustained major damage, but repairs can be made.
Brittany Davis McCombs is a business owner in the strip mall. She caught the aftermath on camera. She says she was down the road when someone texted her about the car hitting the building.
"God's protection was over everybody, it could have been much worse," she said.
The car rammed through the church's front entrance. Windows were left shattered, tables overturned. George Elliott is a member of the congregation. He says the church recently moved into the storefront this year.
"I've seen buildings hit before, but obviously this was a little worse. the car was all the way in," he explained
By the afternoon hours, the glass was cleaned up, and the car had been removed. Besides the boarded up windows, the only sign something that happened, were the tire tracks. A sign of the response of the passionate church members.
"We're gonna have to do some more clean up , obviously replace the store front," said Elliot.
Through the chaos, the crosses hung on the back wall, stayed strong. The small, but mighty congregation plans to meet for Sunday service at the location.
"We wanna worship in our space. We talked about meeting somewhere else, but we decided we would show that we are still here."
